15 Minutes—our second exhibition for Melbourne Design Week. Our online interactions have evolved dramatically, not just in terms of functionality, design, and engagement, but also in how we use the internet. In the past, one computer was shared by a household, used by one person at a time, in a communal space, with limited internet access (to avoid overusing the bandwidth). Internet use was tied to a physical location and time constraints - and always interrupted by a phone call to the landline. Today, our digital lives have changed completely. The internet, and social media more specifically, has become more targeted, controversial, and designed to keep us hooked. We transverse platforms on our devices while doing everyday things, like taking public transport, watching a movie or catching up with friends. It’s a constant source of content and interaction. For 15 Minutes, we invited people to reflect on the times and dedicated spaces that we previously used to interact with the internet and to ask ourselves…has 24 hour access to the online world changed us for the better? While social media has its perks, it’s also a haven for toxicity, misinformation, abuse and declining mental health. While we all check our screen time and try to understand the impact on our mental health, work life and presence at home, it’s clear that we need to shift the way we’re interacting with the online world. Can we transform our usage to maintain the positive aspects of social media while avoiding the pitfalls of algorithms? Visitors engaged with an interactive installation that encouraged reflection and conversation about our digital habits. Each visitor had 15 minutes to use the internet in a communal space. If the computer was in use, well, you had to wait your turn. This event was part of Melbourne Design Week 2025, an initiative of the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.
